History

In 1849, a small group of men and women, Franciscan Tertiaries, left their village of Ettenbueren, Bavaria, under the leadership of two parish priests and began their journey to North America.

Arriving in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, they presented themselves to Bishop John Henni on Pentecost Monday, 1849, and offered their services as missionaries for his diocese, which had been erected in 1843.  Bishop Henni advised settling about four miles south of the bay of Lake Michigan.  The bay was known as “Nojoshing,” an Indian name meaning “a strip of land extending into the water.”

Six women of the little colony, under the leadership of Mother Aemiliana Duerr, pioneered the Franciscan community.  The Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi continue today to carry on the mission of the Church in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and the foundresses.
